As of June 1, 2017, people applying for or renewing a physical therapy license with the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners are required to take the PT Board’s new Texas Jurisprudence Assessment Module (TX JAM).
What is the New TX JAM?
TX JAM is an online assessment tool that evaluates an applicant’s knowledge of the Texas PT Practices Act, the PT Board’s rules, and accompanying standards of ethical conduct. It was developed in partnership with the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.
The TX JAM replaces both the current Jurisprudence (JP) Exam and the ethics/professional responsibility requirement for licensees renewing their PT or PTA license.
Who Must Take the TX JAM?
All applicants for an initial PT or PTA license in Texas must take and achieve a passing score on the TX JAM. Current licensees, and applicants seeking to restore their license, are also required to take and pass the TX JAM.
For those renewing or restoring their license, the TX JAM can be used as part of the continuing competence requirement. It has been assigned a value of two continuing competence units (CCUs).
How Much Does the TX JAM Cost?
Applicants who are applying for their initial PT or PTA license in Texas do not have to pay a fee to take the TX JAM. The fee for those renewing or reinstating their Texas PT or PTA license is $48.00 (plus a 1.6% credit card processing fee).
Details About the TX JAM Exam
The general exam details are:
- There are seventy-five multiple choice questions on the TX JAM.
- There is a two-hour time limit for completing the TX JAM.
- The passing score on the TX JAM is 80% (60 out of 75 answers must be correct).
The TX JAM is administered online and on demand. It is open-book and you are allowed to reference any study materials or documents you have. The following will be available to you prior to and during the TX JAM:
- TX PT Practice Act and Rules
- APTA’s Code of Ethics for the Physical Therapist and Guide for Professional Conduct
- Guide for Conduct of the Physical Therapist Assistant
- Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant
- Fundamental Ethical Principles and Ethical Decision-Making Models
The TX JAM can be taken an unlimited number of times to achieve a passing score; however, the applicant must register and pay for each attempt.
Where Can I Register to Take the TX JAM?
You can register for the exam here. Note that once you register the TX JAM must be completed within 48 hours. If you fail to complete the TX JAM within 48 hours you will be required to re-register and pay again.
