Doctor of Podiatric Medicine License - Now Under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation

Doctor of Podiatric Medicine License - Now Under the Texas Department of Licensing and RegulationIn accordance with Texas House Bill 3078 there has been a change in the regulation of podiatry. As of September 1, 2017 the licensing and regulation of the practice of podiatric medicine transferred from the Texas State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Things to Know

  • All duties and responsibilities for the regulation of podiatry, including licenses and renewals, customer service, and enforcement, has transferred to TDLR.
  • You do not need to get a new license issued by TDLR until your current license expires. All licenses issued by the Texas State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners remain valid until their natural expiration date. When your renewal becomes due, you will receive a TDLR-issued license.
  • Your license renewal will continue the same schedule as you are currently on.
  • The existing podiatry rules have not changed. The rules automatically transferred to the TDLR on September 1, 2017.

Purpose of the Transfer

The Texas State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners was subject to abolishment under the Texas Sunset Act on September 1, 2017, unless continued by the legislature. The Sunset Advisory Commission found that the agency struggled to "carry out its mission effectively, with slow complaint resolution times, unmet performance measures, and nonstandard enforcement practices." To address these concerns, the Commission recommended transferring the regulation of podiatry to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation "to provide institutional stability, administrative savings, improved licensing and enforcement outcomes, and better protection for the people of Texas." House Bill 3078 provided for that transfer.
