The month of January has come to earn the title of National Divorce Month, with unofficial polling of attorney offices and courtrooms showing that more divorce proceedings are initiated during this month than at any other point in the year (“In January, ‘ex’ marks the spot,” CNN, January 17, 2014). Combine this with a noticed uptick in Google searches for “divorce” and “child custody” in January through March and this trend is further established (“January signals the start of ‘divorce season,’ according to study,” Philly.com, January 15, 2014).

With the holidays and efforts to create happy family memories behind them until the next Thanksgiving and the realization that each New Year seems to be coming faster, which brings a heightened urgency to change an unhappy life, the timing makes sense, according to Austin divorce attorney Tony R. Bertolino, managing attorney with Bertolino LLP.
