F2 Visa (Family Members of F1 Visa Holders)

F2 Visa (Family Members of F1 Visa Holders)

An F2 visa is appropriate for spouse and children of F1 visa holders who want to visit or accompany the F1 visa holder to the United States.  One may obtain an F2 visa by an F1 visa holder's spouse and minor children. Under current immigration law, an F2 visa holder may remain in the United States as long as the F1 holder remains in legal status. In addition, an F2 visa holder may change his or her status in the United States.  Under immigration law, an F2 visa holder may not accept employment but may obtain a work visa.  In addition, an F2 visa holder may engage in full or part time educational study.

There are particular requirements for obtaining an F2 visa. First, the minor children and spouse accompanying an F1 student are eligible for admission in F2 status if the student is admitted in F1 status. In addition, the spouse and minor children following to join an F1 student are eligible for admission to the United States in F2 status if they are able to demonstrate that the F1 student has been admitted and is, or will be within 30 days, enrolled in a full course of educational study, or engaged in approved practical training following completion of educational studies.
